Each month the advisory committee of the 49th State Angel Fund reviews potential investment opportunities and makes recommendations on managing the program to the Mayor and CFO. These individuals are:
Chair Mr. Bill Popp, Anchorage Economic Development Corporation: Mr. Popp has over 35 years of Alaska public and private sector experience. He has marketed cities, advised mayors on resource development, held elected positions and owned a small business.
Vice Chair Mr. Rick Nerland, formerly of Spawn Ideas: Mr. Nerland owned and led one of Alaska’s largest advertising and public relations agencies for over 20 years.
Ms. Eleanor Andrews, The Andrews Group: Ms. Andrews is a civic entrepreneur who has developed neighborhood, health, housing and economic development programs.
Ms. Gail Schubert, Bering Straits Native Corporation: Ms. Schubert has led Bering Straits, Alaska's 11th largest corporation, since 2010. In addition, after a successful career on Wall Street, Ms. Schubert practiced law in Anchorage.
Mr. Mead Treadwell, PT Capital. In addition to his expertise in private equity, Mr. Treadwell has a strong history of public service, having served as Alaska's Lieutenant Governor. He has also been an investor, director and officer of technology companies.
Dr. Yaso Thiru of Alaska Pacific University: Dr. Thiru is currently a Professor of accounting and management at Alaska Pacific University. She researches and writes about social entrepreneurship focusing on what makes social entrepreneurs successful and how their work impacts local communities.
Ms. Cortney Kitchen of Kitchen Legal, LLC: In 2015, Cortney started Kitchen Legal, LLC, an Anchorage law firm focusing on land use, natural resource, and property law, as well as business formation. Cortney is a founding member and director of Denali Rescue Volunteers, an Alaska non-profit supporting the rescue, medical, and clean-up efforts conducted on Denali each climbing season.
Mr. Stephen Trimble of Arctic Solar Ventures: Mr. Trimble is Founder and CEO of Alaska's first clean energy development company. He has served on boards of the Nature Conservancy, the Alaska Arctic Policy Commission, the Alaska Minerals Commission, the UAA Geoscience Advisory Board, the UAA College of Arts & Sciences Advisory Board, and the Alaska Emerging Energy Technology Fund.
Mr. Joe Morrison (Director): Mr. Morrison is a four-time founder: Of DealBoss, of Biz21 Consulting, of Launch : Alaska, and of the 49th State Angel Fund, as the initial staff person to create and manage the program from inception (2012 - 2014). He returned to manage the fund in 2017.
Ms. Susan Preston (Advisor): Ms. Preston is managing partner for Seattle Angel Fund, general partner for CalCEF Clean Energy Angel Fund, and has received recognition as the Small Business Person of the Year from the Small Business Council of America as well as the Hans Severiens award for advancing angel investing from the Angel Capital Association.
The Municipality of Anchorage also acknowledges the work of Lucinda Mahoney, Allan Johnston, Mayor Dan Sullivan, Kate Giard, Steve Mercil, Dr. David McGuire and Dale Tran as previous founders, advocates or advisors of the 49th State Angel Fund.
